The Hannah Meyer Project

On Friday 12 August 2016 COA Sydney launched The Hannah Meyer Nursing Homes Project.  The project is a coordinated effort from COA Sydney supported by Jewish House, together with various other organisations to ensure that Jewish residents in non-denominational nursing homes are regularly visited for Shabbat Candle Lighting and especially for Chaggim, combatting isolation and continuing that connection with our community.

COA Sydney has been facilitating outreach services to non-denominational nursing homes for 25 years.  The Hannah Meyer Project aims to expand and will consolidate this program across the community, with COA assisting to coordinate visits to extend communal reach and ensure that residents are visited regularly.

In addition, volunteers from Jewish organisations across the community have put their hands up to be involved, making this a Sydney-wide initiative. As more people reach an age when they need care and with limited spaces in Jewish nursing homes, numbers of residents at non-denominational homes are on the rise.

Hannah (the woman we honour with this program) was a well-known and respected community figure in the Eastern Suburbs.  She worked at the NSW Board of Jewish Education for over 47 years and was an active member of the Child Holocaust Survivors Group and a member of the Sydney Jewish Museum, attending many events over the years. She volunteered every Shabbat as part of COA’s existing nursing homes outreach program for 15 years at the Vaucluse Nursing Home – bringing yiddishkeit to Jewish residents and creating lifelong relationships.

COA has approached many organisations across the community, calling for volunteers to be part of our outreach service on an ongoing basis.  We have had an incredible response and look forward to growing the program.  Hannah Meyer would have been so proud to be a part of this and we are so happy to be able to honour her in this way.

There are over 17 nursing homes involved in The Hannah Meyer Project.  To be part of this exciting initiative please email or call Julia on 9389 0035.
