Remembrance Day 2020

On Wednesday November 11 COA held a small but heartfelt Remembrance Day at the COA Centre.

We started by taking a closer look at General Sir John Monash, a civil engineer who rose to command Australia’s 13th Infantry Brigade before the first world war, and then, shortly after its outbreak, he became commander of the 4th Brigade in Egypt, with whom he took part in the Gallipoli campaign. At 11:11 a minutes silence was held, and a short ceremony took place with COA Board members reciting a reading from Isiah 2.4, the Call to Remembrance, and the Ode.

After our service was complete it seemed appropriate for us to take a moment to honour Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, former chief rabbi of the UK from 1991 to 2013, who has been taken from us last Shabbat (7 November) at the age of 72. Rabbi Sacks was widely accepted as an ambassador for the Jewish community in the UK and was well respected by many in both the Jewish and non-Jewish world. He wrote numerous books on Jewish thought, tolerance, extremism, commentaries on Jewish liturgy, as well as producing a documentary series, and hosting a website rabbisacks.org where he expresses his unwavering trust and hope in faith, particularly Judaism.

Finally we recalled the horrors of Kristallnacht two days after its anniversary by replaying an online event hosted by the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, featuring a discussion between Joanna Kowalski and therapist, speaker, author, and Auschwitz survivor Dr Edith Eger.

New General Manager for COA

COA has hired Robbie Clifford to take the role of General Manger at COA. Robbie was our volunteer coordinator during COVID and we are so pleased he has decided to join us again this time as our GM.

Kosher meals on wheels

COA's Kosher Meals are made by professional Kosher caterers and delivered to recipients homes by our friendly and dedicated volunteers. There is a large menu to choose from and every meal delivered is subsidised by COA, so why not check the menu and see if this service may be right for you.

COA is manned by a small paid staff who work hand in glove with over 200 active volunteers; coordinating and delivering services, providing organisational administration, taking enquiries from members, and ensuring compliance with government guidelines.

What we do

COA is a not-for-profit organisation in Eastern Sydney caring for the needs of Jewish and other seniors. We live our ethos by providing our clients connection to a social network of peers, activities in large and small groups 6 days weekly, and opportunities to access volunteer work, services, and support, to remain independently in their own homes for as long as practical. In all possible ways we aim to enrich the lives of Jewish seniors.
Management Committee

COA is governed by a volunteer Committee of Management whose members provide daily support to staff with running of activities, administration processes, and governance at the COA Centre. They determine our strategies going forward and ensure COA can provide the best quality services possible while remaining financially and legally secure.

COA Centre Activities

As COA undergoes a transformation some of our usual activities offered at the COA Krygier Centre have moved offsite, whilst others remain at the Centre, and new activities will be added as they become available.

COA Fresh is a weekly delivery of fresh produce and other items going to over 200 homes in our community. The program helps to provide food security to those who are unable to attend the shops and may not have the finances to afford fresh fruit and vegetables each week.
